(CENTREVILLE) – A special event hosted by the St. Joseph County Sheriff's Department and the St. Joseph County United Way is being called a success.

On Tuesday, the United Way and the Sheriff's Department held a roofsit on the roof of the Sheriff's Department. Volunteers were asked to call people to have them donate pledges from 7 AM until 12 PM. As of Wednesday afternoon, the total amount raised is $18,186.

The goal was to raise $10,000. United Way Executive Director Kelly Hostetler says she is overwhelmed by the response of the people who were asked to give. ...... {LISTEN}.

The event was done to help raise money to purchase new 800 megahertz pagers for St. Joseph County Victim's Services and the St. Joseph County Sheriff's Dive, Rescue and Recovery teams. Hostetler says the pagers would be a big help in getting these volunteers where they need to be quicker than they currently are able to. ...... {LISTEN}.

The total cost for the pagers are $25,000 for each of the organizations. Hostetler and St. Joseph County Undersheriff Mark Lillywhite says the roofsit is a good start to getting the new pagers.

Contributions are still being accepted for the roofsit. If you would like to make a donation, you can contact the United Way office by calling 269-467-9099.
