(STURGIS) – Eastwood School hosted a community open house Thursday afternoon.

Earlier this year, Eastwood found out they had been named a Lighthouse School, through the Leader In Me Program. This open house was the school's way to say thank you to the Sturgis area for achieving this designation.

Eastwood Principal Michael Miller says he's overwhelmed by the number of people who showed up for the event. ...... {LISTEN}.

There was food and games for those who attended the open house, along with a presentation by Eastwood students. In addition there was face painting, bounce houses, free books and much more.

The Leader In Me program is based on the Steven Covey “Seven
Habits” principles, which are being taught to the students. It empowers them with the leadership and life skills they need to thrive in the 21st Century. Eastwood is 1 of 29 Lighthouse Schools in Michigan.

In June, representatives from Franklin Covey came and interviewed students at Eastwood along with the faculty and parent's groups to see if they school could receive the Lighthouse Designation.

Eastwood has been using the Leader In Me program for five years. Miller says he hopes Eastwood can be an example and an inspiration to other schools to try and achieve the Lighthouse designation.
