(COLDWATER) – The suspect arrested in connection with a stabbing death in Coldwater has been arraigned.

Coldwater Director of Public Safety Joe Scheid says 33 year old Raiko Moreira-Gonzalez was arraigned in Branch County District Court. He is charged with open murder and is being held without bond. Gonzalez has entered a plea of not guilty.

Coldwater Police officers were called to the Quality Inn at 3 AM Saturday after receiving a 911 call. They found a man, who has been identified as 35 year old Juan Uresti-Rodriguez, unresponsive inside a motel room. Rodriguez was pronounced dead at the scene.

Gonzalez fled the area prior to police arriving. Witnesses provided a description of him and his vehicle, allowing officers to broadcast a Be On The Lookout to other area police agencies. Michigan State Police troopers spotted the car on U.S. 12 near Quincy and were able to take Gonzalez into custody. They found evidence related to the stabbing in his car.

Scheid says the two men were arguing in Rodriguez's room. During the argument, Gonzalez took out a knife and stabbed Rodriguez one time in the chest.

The case remains under investigation.
