(STURGIS) – Organizers of the Sturgis Juneteenth Celebration say they were happy with how the event turned out.

Friday afternoon the community was invited to come to Free Church Park to help recognize June 19, 1865, the day slaves were emancipated in Texas. It came over two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued by President Abraham Lincoln on January 1, 1863.

Event co-organizer Alexis Gering says they put together the celebration in two weeks and spent a lot of time getting information around and items ready. ...... {LISTEN}.

Gering says the celebration was also designed to let people know about Sturgis' African-American history. ...... {LISTEN}.

Organizers say they are planning on having a bigger event in 2021.
