(QUINCY) – One person is dead and three others were injured in an early morning apartment fire in Quincy.

Quincy Fire Chief Michael Sherman says his department was sent to 58 West Chicago Road at 3:34 Tuesday morning for a fire in an apartment building, after Branch County Central Dispatch received multiple calls of the blaze. Quincy firefighters along with the Coldwater Fire Department arrived and found heavy fire throughout the first-floor apartment, with the conditions blocking the second-floor egress.

59 year old Robin Etheridge jumped from the porch roof before firefighters arrived, injuring her leg. She told fire crews there were people trapped upstairs. Etheridge was taken to ProMedica Coldwater Regional Hospital to be treated for her injuries.

As some of the firefighters started battling the blaze, others performed a primary search of the second floor. They found three people in an apartment and removed them from the building. 39 year old David Green succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

37 year old Amanda Green and 45 year old Joseph Price were taken to ProMedica Coldwater Regional Hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation.

As other fire departments were called in to help fight the fire, a second search of the building found more people in the basement, who were unharmed. Several pets did not survive the fire.

The blaze was finally put out. Sherman says the fire originated in the south east lower apartment and spread upstairs. The fire is currently being investigated by the Quincy Fire and Police Departments, Coldwater Fire Marshall Steve Trall and the Michigan State Police Fire Investigation Unit. The incident is not considered suspicious in nature.

Also assisting at the scene were the Bronson, Lakeland, Allen and Fremont Fire Departments, Branch County Victims Services, the Branch County Road Commission, Lifecare Ambulance, Marshall and Reading EMS and the American Red Cross.
