SHS Releases Update On Graduation Ceremony
By: Mike Stiles - Friday, July 3, 2020

(STURGIS) – Sturgis High School has released more information regarding their July 19 graduation ceremony.

High School Principal Nicholas Herblet says in May, there were two graduation plans that were developed. One was to hold a normal ceremony, and the second was to have an alternative ceremony, which was to be put in place if large gatherings were still not allowed in July.

In an updated release issued Thursday, Herblet says it doesn't appear as though large gatherings will be allowed. Under the Michigan Safe Start Plan, we are currently in Stage 4, which only allows gatherings outdoors of up to 100 people. Based on this information, and with the several new cases of COVID-19 in St. Joseph County over the last month, Sturgis High School is going with their alternative plan.

Herblet says under this plan, members of the Sturgis High School Class of 2020 will have their names read as they walk in their cap and gown across a stage that will be set up in the parking lot at SHS. The school will also utilize an FM system that will allow people in vehicles to hear the ceremony. Also, up to 9 family members will be allowed in attendance near the stage to take pictures and witness their graduate's name being read. Masks will be required by all those near the stage.

Also, senior speeches, staff speeches, senior of the year and other traditional elements of graduation will be pre-recorded and included in the final digital ceremony.

The ceremony will have staggered start times. The first group will begin at 1 PM and it's anticipated the ceremony will last until 5:30 PM.

Herblet says a plan for poor weather is being considered. Other details are still being worked out.
