(ST. JOSEPH COUNTY, IN) – An Indiana Toll Road worker was struck and killed Thursday.

Indiana State Police say at 1:50 PM, they received calls of a crash on the Indiana Toll Road near the 81.5 mile marker in St. Joseph County. Preliminary investigation indicated that 61 year old Ronald Smith of Edwardsburg had parked his maintenance truck on the right shoulder on the Toll Road with the emergency lights activated. Smith got out of his vehicle and was sweeping debris from the right shoulder when a vehicle traveling east allegedly went off the road, side swiping the truck and then striking Smith, killing him.

The vehicle continued off the roadway, rolling over and coming to a stop in the ditch on the south side of the road.

The driver of the vehicle, 70 year old Charles Bellows and his passenger, 69 year old Deborah Bellows, both of Wayzata, Minnesota, were taken to South Bend Memorial Hospital.

The crash is still under investigation.
