By: Mike Stiles - Friday, August 21, 2020

(LANSING) – Michigan's seasonally adjusted unemployment rate dropped down to 8.7 percent during the month of July.

The Michigan Department of Technology, Management & Budget says the July figure is down from 14.9 percent in June. July payroll jobs in Michigan rose by 103,000, but this was well below the 266,000 jobs added in the month of June.

Jason Palmer, Director of the Bureau of Labor Market Information and Strategic Initiatives, says Michigan has now recovered about half of the coronavirus related job cuts that occurred in March and April 2020. Palmer says payroll employment has increased by about 540,000 over the three month period of May through July 2020.

The largest increases in employment from June to July were in Leisure and Hospitality; Other Services and Transportation Equipment.

The July 2019 Michigan unemployment rate was 4.1 percent.
