(ST. JOSEPH CO., IN) – A Goshen man was arrested following a police pursuit in a vehicle alleged to have been stolen.

Around 7 PM Thursday, Indiana State Police located a black, 2004 GMC pick up at a gas station near the intersection of Kern Road and U.S. 931 in South Bend. The vehicle had been reported stolen out of Bremen.

As troopers approached the pick up, the driver, later identified as 29 year old Jared Hilty of Goshen, drove away and refused to stop. He pulled out of the gas station and allegedly drove south in the northbound lanes of U.S. 931, causing an Indiana State Police car to drive off the side of the road to avoid being hit.

Hilty continued heading south. Near the intersection of Roycroft Drive, Hilty drove off the right side of the road, heading southwest through a soybean field. He eventually crashed into a tree, and the truck caught on fire.

Hilty ran away but was captured after a short chase. He was arrested on charges of criminal recklessness; theft; a felony charge of resisting law enforcement; a misdemeanor charge of resisting law enforcement; driving while suspended; and an active warrant for probation violation out of Elkhart County. Hilty was taken to the St. Joseph County Jail.

Assisting Indiana State Police were the St. Joseph County Police Department; the Bremen Police Department; the Starke County Sheriff's Department; the Marshall County Drug Task Force; Southwest Fire and South Bend EMS.
