DASAS Purchases Its Own Shelter
By: Mike Stiles - Friday, December 4, 2020

(THREE RIVERS) - Domestic and Sexual Abuse Services (DASAS) now owns the building they have used as a shelter.

Since launching the emergency shelter in 1986, DASAS has leased the Hillman House from the First Presbyterian Church of Three Rivers for a nominal fee of $1 per year. DASAS recently purchased the house from the Church.

Executive Director Krista DeBoer says the Church has been a generous partner with DASAS over the years. This new act of generosity empowers the organization to take ownership of their efforts to create a sustainable shelter for survivors to find a safe haven.

This purchase solidifies DASAS' ongoing commitment to the community. DeBoer says they will continue to be a place of temporary protection and support for survivors escaping sexual assault and domestic violence of all forms. Hillman House helps individuals escape from these situations, and act as a place for protection as they choose how to move forward.

Additionally, DASAS offers a variety of other services to help survivors and their children, including supportive counseling and access to available resources.

For DASAS, this means additional funding opportunities that are only eligible to agencies that have ownership of their buildings. DASAS plans to improve the shelter experience and lives of those who use their services. A capital campaign to renovate the building will be launched soon, which will allow for an expansion in services.
