(STEUBEN COUNTY) – A roll over crash on the Indiana Toll Road Saturday claimed the life of a Colon man.

Indiana State Police say at 6:45 PM Saturday they were called to the 151 mile marker in Steuben County. Troopers found a semi pulling a bulk liquid tanker that rolled over in the center median. The driver was trapped inside and was unresponsive.

First responders were finally able to remove the driver, 61 year old Stephen Downs of Colon, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

The initial investigation determined that Downs was traveling east in the left lane and for an unknown reason, ran off the edge of the road and onto the left shoulder. Downs tried to correct the situation but lost control, and the semi and tanker both rolled over on the driver's side and came to rest in the median.

Because of the damage to the tanker, approximately 4,000 gallons of milk and approximately 100 gallons of diesel fuel spilled out. Both the east and west lanes were closed for two hours to clean up the spillage and debris.

Assisting at the scene were the Steuben County Sheriff's Department, the Fremont Fire Department and the Steuben EMS. The crash is still under investigation.
