City Updates Audience On Hospital History

(STURGIS) – A history of the sale of Sturgis Hospital was given during Wednesday's City Commission meeting.

City Manager Mike Hughes started off by sharing with the audience at the Sturges-Young Auditorium how the idea for the City selling the Hospital came about. ...... {LISTEN}.

The matter was brought to the voters in November 2009 and it passed with 68 percent of the voters approving the initiative.

City Attorney Roger Bird spoke next and shared how the agreement and the articles of incorporation were created and what the do for the hospital and for the City. He says that the City does not have any authority over the hospital, unless Sturgis Hospital Incorporated should go into default.

Several hospital staff members spoke to the Commission, asking them to help find a solution to the recent announcement by hospital leadership that some departments would be closing down and approximately 60 employees would be out of work.
