(CENTREVILLE) - Residents of the 36th Michigan State House District had the chance to meet the men running for the Republican nomination for the seat.
The Sturgis Area Chamber of Commerce and the Three Rivers Area Chamber of Commerce host a Meet The Candidates event on the Grand Concourse at Glen Oaks Community College.
Incumbent State Representative Steve Carra, Max Coon and Luke Lori were asked questions presented by the Chambers and from the members of the audience.
One of the questions asked was "Where do you stand on the elimination of property tax?".
Lori had the chance to answer the question first, says he supports eliminating property tax and wants real reform that doesn't blow a hole in people's budgets. He says an idea he has is to support the "pop up". He says when you purchase a house the property taxes go sky high when you're the owner and that needs to be eliminated.
Carra was the next to answer. He says he supports the full elimination of property tax, which is approximately $20 billion a year. He says there is a lot of space to cut out the waste, fraud and abuse. Carra says he doesn't believe that homeowners should have to pay tax for what is rightfully theirs, which is their house and property.
Coon then gave his response. He says everyone hates taxes but it's a part of life we all have to live with. While it's great to say I have an idea to remove taxes but finding a solution and having it work is difficult. He says if we eliminate everything all at once, we fall into the realm of saying "What's missing and we'll find it later".
We'll hear more from the candidates during upcoming news casts.
