(CENTREVILLE) - There will be a new court starting in St. Joseph County in 2026.

St. Joseph County Family Court will establish a new Abuse and Neglect Court. Family Court has received a $60,000 grant from the State of Michigan to start the new court.

Earlier this week, the St. Joseph County Commission Executive Committee heard a presentation by Probate Court Judge Kevin Kane on the new court. It will be a brand new way to view and handle some of the abuse and neglect cases, specifically those cases that deal with substance abuse treatment.

Kane says that he is working with individuals on how to best formulate their plan for the court. Cass County and Kalamazoo County have similar courts and Kane says he is looking at what works best there and in other counties to make it work for St. Joseph County.
