(STURGIS) – Several citizens attended the March 22 Sturgis City Commission meeting to show their support for the idea of having urban chickens in the City limits.

City Manager Andrew Kuk shared with the Commission and the audience that the topic was first brought to the City Commission in 2011 and again in 2021. The City Commission and the Planning Commission at that time discussed the issue, and the Planning Commission came up with an ordinance. However there was no consensus in 2021 from the City Commission to pursue the matter any further.

After the Commission shared their thoughts on the matter, Mayor Jeff Mullins asked for comments from the public. Everyone who spoke said they would like to have chickens because of the eggs they produce and to help cut the cost of their grocery bills.

Rudy Lance said she comes from a farm background and wonders if the concerns of having urban chickens isn’t overshadowing the possible positives they could bring. ...... {LISTEN}.

Jayna Beard shared that she understands the people’s desire to have chickens for the eggs. She also agreed with Commissioner Bob Hile and his concern over the lack of enforcement of the City’s dog ordinance and says if chickens were to be allowed, then rules have to be put into place and enforced. ...... {LISTEN}.

By a vote of 7-2, the Commission agreed to send the matter back to the Planning Commission for review and to bring to the City Commission a proposed ordinance.
