(CENTREVILLE) - A Branch County man has been sentenced for the role he played in a fatal crash that killed one person and injured two others.

St. Joseph County Circuit Court officials say 56 year old Todd Gilbert of Bronson Township has been given a sentence of 5 to 15 years in prison. He plead no contest to a charge of operating under the influence of alcohol and two charges of operating under the influence causing injury.

As part of the plea agreement, the St. Joseph County Prosecutor's Office dismissed several other charges which included second degree murder, along with possession of meth.

On July 1, 2025, the Michigan State Police were called to Lake Road in White Pigeon Township at 5:15 PM for a crash between a golf cart and a pick up. Troopers say that the golf cart was carrying three people and was traveling west when it was rear ended by the pick up.

The driver of the golf cart, 61 year old James Hansen of White Pigeon, was pronounced dead at the scene. The two passengers were taken to Bronson Methodist Hospital in Kalamazoo with serious injuries.

Gilbert was treated for minor injuries at Beacon Health Three Rivers Hospital.
