(STURGIS) - A Sturgis organization is taking steps to help people get food.

The Sturgis Area Community Foundation, with support from the Michigan Health Endowment Fund, is now accepting applications for its Food Assistance Grant Program, a funding opportunity designed to strengthen food access and address rising food insecurity across St. Joseph County.

As demand for food assistance continues to grow, particularly in response to recent reductions in public food assistance programs, this grant program aims to support food banks, food pantries, nonprofits, and community organizations working on the front lines to meet immediate needs while building sustainable, long-term solutions.

Organizations may apply for grants of up to $10,000. Funding decisions will be based on project scope, organizational capacity, demonstrated community need, and available funds. Applicants are encouraged to request the amount necessary to successfully carry out their proposed project.

The Food Assistance Grant Program supports a wide range of initiatives, including strengthening food distribution infrastructure, increasing staff capacity, upgrading systems and technology, modifying or improving food access programs, and limited food procurement to address urgent needs. Eligible expenses may include shelving and storage systems, refrigeration and freezer units, packaging supplies, facility improvements, staffing support, and technology enhancements that improve efficiency and service delivery.

Eligible applicants include 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations, faith-based organizations, food banks and food pantries, community centers providing food assistance, and other organizations with a demonstrated commitment to addressing food insecurity in St. Joseph County.

Applications will be accepted and reviewed on a rolling basis until funds are depleted. Organizations are encouraged to apply early.

For more information or to apply, visit the Sturgis Area Community Foundation's website or contact the Foundation directly by e-mailing sacf@sturgisfoundation.org or by calling 269-659-8508. Office hours are Monday through Thursday from 8 AM to 4:30 PM and Friday from 8 AM to 2 PM.
