(STEUBEN COUNTY) - A law enforcement officer from Central Indiana is facing charges of illegally harvesting deer in the Northeast part of the state.
The Indiana Department of Natural Resources say that Aaron Mauk, a 10 year veteran with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department was formally charged March 3 with three misdemeanor counts of unlawful taking of a wild animal and one count of false information to a check in station in Steuben County. Mauk admitted to harvesting three deer during the 2025 hunting season without the required state license.
The investigation started January 3 when Indiana Conservation Officers interviewed Mauk at his home in Fishers after receiving reports of illegal harvesting of deer.
IMPD Chief Tanya Terry stripped Mauk of his police powers and placed him on administrative duty as of March 18, after the department was notified of the formal charges. The IMPD Internal Affairs Division has started an administrative investigation into the incident.
Under Indiana law, the charge of unlawful taking of a wild animal is punishable by a fine of up to $1,000 and by up to 180 days in jail. The providing false information to a check in station crime is punishable by a $500 fine and up to 60 days in jail.
