(LANSING) - Officials are urging Michigan pet and livestock owners to take extra precautions regarding bird flu while spring migration is happening.

According to the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, migrating wild birds increase the threat of spreading avian influenza, which thrives in cool, damp spring conditions.

The virus can spread easily through contact with wild birds, infected animals, contaminated equipment and clothing.

If you have animals, you are urged to keep pets and livestock away from wild birds, also secure feed sources, limit visitors and to disinfect boots, gear and tools.

The Ag Department is also recommending that people wash their hands frequently along with allowing down time between farm visits to reduce the chance of spreading the virus.

The risk to the general public remains low according to Ag officials. However, people should still handle meat and eggs safely and avoid consuming raw milk.

Any suspected cases in animals should be reported to the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development.
