(INDIANAPOLIS) - New drivers in Indiana can obtain their driver's license when they turn 16.
Governor Mike Braun has announced that beginning July 1, 16 year olds can get their driver's license. As part of House Enrolled Act 1200 signed on March 12, the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles is now authorized to issue driver's licenses at age 16, lowering the previous minimum age of 16 years and 90 days.
Braun says this commonsense change gives families more flexibility while maintaining the strong safety standards and training requirements that help keep Indiana roads safe.
Requirements to obtain a driver's license in Indiana have not changed. All new drivers must still complete all of the following requirements: Pass the written test and hold an Indiana Learner's Permit for 180 days; Successfully complete a Driver's Education Program; Present a signed Log of Supervised Driving; Pass a vision screening test; And pass a driving test.
Additionally, a parent, legal guardian or other adult must be willing to assume the obligations imposed by signing an agreement of financial liability. Adults signing the agreement must present documents of identification providing identity and age.
