(INDIANAPOLIS) - New restrictions on SNAP purchases in Indiana are taking effect this week, limiting which foods can be bought using benefits.
SNAP recipients will no longer be allowed to use benefits to purchase certain sugary drinks or candy. State officials say that the change is part of the Smart SNAP initiative, which is designed to promote healthier eating habits among Hoosier families.
Indiana Family and Social Services Administration officials say that data shows that 66% of adults in the state are overweight or obese, with many not eating fruits or vegetables on a daily basis.
Supporters of the policy say reducing access to sugary items may encourage better nutrition choices. Critics of the change argue that the restrictions will place additional burdens on people who are already struggling with food insecurity.
Under the new rules, sugary drinks are defined as non-alcoholic beverages containing natural or artificial sweeteners, excluding milk-based drinks and 100% fruit juice. Candy includes sweetened products such as bars or pieces that do not require refrigeration.
